Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about buying, selling, and appraising gold, silver, and collectible coins with Atlanta Gold & Coin.

Silver Coins & Bullion

What's the value of silver?

The value of silver is determined by the current spot price and your silver’s weight, purity, and rarity. Spot prices fluctuate throughout the trading day based on global supply and demand. You can view our current buy rates on our What We Pay page.

The value of a silver dollar depends on the year of mintage, the condition, if the coin has been certified, and the mint mark of the coin, if applicable. Morgan and Peace silver dollars, for example, can range from melt value to thousands of dollars depending on these factors.

Dimes, quarters, and half dollars issued for general circulation in 1964 and earlier are composed of 90% silver. Silver dollars produced in 1935 and earlier are also 90% silver. Half dollars issued from 1965 to 1970 contain 40% silver content.

The best way is to examine the edge of the coin. If you see a copper stripe, the coin is clad. If the stripe is silver with traces of copper, it may be 40% silver. If the edge is solid silver, it’s likely a silver coin. Additionally, most silver coins have reeded edges.

Mint marks are located in different areas depending on the type of coin. On Morgan and Peace silver dollars, mint marks appear on the back of the coin — beneath the wreath on Morgan dollars and beneath “ONE” on Peace silver dollars. Philadelphia-minted silver dollars have no mint marks.

Gold Coins & Bullion

Were gold coins used in general circulation?

Yes. Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins, composed of 90% gold, were produced for general circulation and used for daily transactions. Denominations included $1, $2.50, $3, $4, $5, $10, and $20 pieces.

Bullion coins derive their value solely from their precious metals content — their worth moves directly with the spot price of gold, silver, platinum, or palladium. Numismatic coins gain value from both the underlying metal content plus rarity, historical significance, and collectible demand, which can far exceed melt value.

Grading & Certification

Were gold coins used in general circulation?

Submit coins to reputable grading companies such as the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). As a PCGS Authorized Dealer, Atlanta Gold & Coin can assist with submissions and provide guidance on whether certification makes sense for your specific coins.

Consider certification cost against the potential increase in value. Rare coins — older type coins and key date coins in good condition — benefit the most from professional grading. Modern coins typically aren’t cost-effective to certify unless they’re in exceptional condition or are low-mintage issues.

Rare & Valuable Coins

What are the most valuable U.S. coins?

Among the most valuable U.S. coins is the 1787 Brasher Doubloon, valued at over $7 million. Other notable examples include the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, the 1804 Silver Dollar, and the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. Values of rare coins can change significantly at auction based on condition and provenance.

Foreign coins produced prior to the 19th century generally possess more value than their modern counterparts. Atlanta Gold & Coin purchases all precious metal foreign coins regardless of condition and origin — bring them in for an evaluation.

Only three 1343 Edward III Florin coins are known to exist, making it one of the rarest coins in the world. Other contenders include the 1849 Double Eagle (only one known specimen, held by the Smithsonian) and the unique 1870-S $3 gold piece.
