A Collectible Commemorative for Breast Cancer Awareness

Cancer is one of the world’s most pervasive, insidious diseases. It can attack every part of the body in many forms. Breast cancer is among the more common forms. Among women as well as men, it’s estimated that over 250,00 Americans will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2018, according to data from breastcancer.org.

However, since 1989, the outlook for breast cancer has brightened significantly. Doctors now report higher survivor rates with better prognoses, thanks to increased awareness coupled with early detection initiatives, medical advances, and public trends toward healthier living. In fact, since 1990 survivor rates have risen by 34 percent over previous years.

On April 29, 2016, Congress enacted the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Act, recognizing the importance of educating the public about this potentially fatal disease. The collectible coin celebrates the lives lost, saved, and touched by breast cancer, as well as the people who battle tirelessly to defeat it through research and treatment.

More Than Just a Collectible

A collection of various items for Breast Cancer Awareness

This commemorative coin also contributes to its cause. Surcharges from sales go directly to fund ongoing research through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). The automatic donation increases the sentimental value of this beautiful collectible for coin buyers, dealers, and collectors, especially of gold coins.

Three coins complete the series: an uncirculated first-strike silver dollar, a rose gold $5 uncirculated coin, and a rose gold $5 proof. Each comes encased with a “Running Man” pink ribbon label in collaboration with Susan B. Komen, the nation’s largest breast cancer organization. In addition to the U.S. Mint donation to BRCF, Cable Shopping Network will also donate at least $2 to Komen for each coin sold.

First Rose Gold Coin Represents Pink Ribbon Campaign

The Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin is to date the only commemorative ever minted by the U.S. Mint in pink-tinged rose gold. The choice of metal is a nod to the pink ribbons worn every October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month since the campaign was launched in 1991. Emily Damstra, an artist in the United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program, designed both faces.
