90% US Silver Coins
Junk silver coins refer to silver coins that contain no collectible or numismatic value beyond the silver content of the coins. In other words, junk coins are bought and sold primariliy for their silver value. The price of these coins is determined by multiplying the silver weight of the coins by the current spot or market price of silver. While junk silver coins are most commonly associated with 90% U.S. silver dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars minted in 1964 or earlier, they can also refer to 40% silver Kennedy half dollars (minted from 1965 – 1970), 35% silver war nickels (minted from 1942 – 1945), or even foreign coins, such as 80% silver Canadian dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars minted in 1967 and earlier. Starting in 1965, the US mint stopped using silver to mint coins for general circulation, with the exception of the 40% silver Kennedy half dollars noted above.
