How Do I Get Started in Coin Collecting?

Starting a coin collection doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, you can start your collection with coins you might already have. As you begin collecting, start by choosing coin categories and ironing out a personal budget. Then, you’re ready to get started.

Determine Your Collecting Approach

There are several common collection themes to consider while you establish your approach. For instance, try considering the coin’s minting (the manufacturing process) and the mintage (number of coins with the same design). Other collection approaches include the time period, the coin’s designer, the finish, and the design theme. If you seek numismatic coins, which are rare and collectible coins, you may even watch their value increase as time passes.

Consider Your Budget

You can set your coin collection budget for one year or beyond that, depending on your collection goals. Start by determining your budget for the first year, and then check and adjust accordingly. If you’re having a tough time figuring out a budget, try setting an annual minimum. If you start to become more interested in coin collecting, or if your finances improve over time and you can afford to invest in coins, you can set an annual maximum.

Start Your Collection

You can start building your collection by either finding or buying coins. No matter if you buy or find a coin, make sure you get an appraisal to determine its value. As you start your collection, check every coin you’re considering to see how lustrous (shiny) it is, if it’s worn, or if it’s damaged. You can also find coins through banks, coin catalogs, coin dealers, auctions, coin seller databases, and antique shows.
