This is in contrast to American gold eagles and South African gold krugerrands, two of the most highly recognized gold coins worldwide, which are 22k gold. While these coins are less pure, they contain the same amount of pure gold as Canadian gold maple leaf coins. Other alloys, such as copper and silver are added to the gold to make it more durable, thus increasing the overall weight of the coins.
