Is Your Coin Collection Too Large to Transport? Are You Out of State? We Can Help!
A large gold, silver, platinum, and/or palladium coin collection can include hundreds or even thousands of coins.
Transporting that much gold, silver, or other precious metals can be a difficult and costly task. Although we are not in the business of transporting all coins or collections that are presented to us, we can certainly help in certain situations.
If the collection is too large, you are out of state, and you need us, we can handle the transportation for you under certain and specific circumstances!
The Challenge of Transporting Coins & Coin Collections
For those with only a few coins to sell, transportation is rarely a problem. All you must do is bring them in or mail them to Atlanta Gold & Coin Buyers. We’ll discuss that later in this article. However, if you have a large collection, the challenge can be great for several reasons.
Gold and silver are heavy. For example, one monster box of silver eagles weighs nearly 40 pounds. That’s just 500 1 troy ounce coins. So, if you have many monster boxes of silver eagles or similar silver coins, that could be a significant weight to lift and carry.
Gold coin collections typically involve fewer coins, but we have purchased many gold coin collections over 150 troy ounces. This may sound like a large and heavy collection, but 150 troy ounces is only 10lbs, which is manageable for most people. Even though ‘larger’ gold coin collections may include less ounces, the value is typically much higher than silver coin collections of around the same number of coins.
That brings us to our next point.
When moving coins from one place to another, you have the security risks inherent in exposing your coins to new environments and strangers. There are ways to deal with this when you mail your coins such as insurance and how you package your coins to be mailed.
When you transport just a few coins, it’s easier to carry them in a way that no one notices. However, when you have a truck (or even a trunk) load full of coins, you’re more likely to draw unwanted attention when loading and unloading.
While it may not be a pleasant thought, we don’t always truly know our neighbors whether it be the next-door neighbors or the house three doors down and across the street. If you are having to empty bank safety deposit boxes, more and more crime occurs with thieves staking out bank parking lots for the next opportunity.
If you must move the coins from a bank deposit box to your vehicle, at the very least it is a good idea to have at least one other person with you. To be the most secure, you could hire private security or give Atlanta Gold & Coin Buyers a call and we would be happy to assist if the collection meets our requirements for travel.
At Atlanta Gold & Coin Buyers, we have served as the go to Johns Creek coin dealer for over 12 years. We have been at the same location over that time and have never had a serious security incident. We operate out of an executive office building so it is perfect for the safe and secure parking, unloading, and loading of your coins or entire coin collection!
Another scenario we have faced in the last year is one in which several heirs to an estate coin collection of platinum, silver, gold, and other numismatic coins worth over $700,000.00 wanted to have the collection appraised and immediately sold.
We arranged to meet at a bank near where the out-of-town heirs were staying at to appraise the collection and complete the transaction. Both our team and the group of heirs hired private security to accompany us from start to finish of the transaction. While it was an additional cost for both sides, the added security was well worth the investment.
It is important to note that in 99 out of 100 situations, outside security is not necessary. However, if you are simply worried and have the means to hire your own security, by all means do what you feel is best. If your collection is in the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars and you are moving it from a public place to a dealer or some other location, it couldn’t hurt to inquire with private security firms as to their fee and availability.
If in doubt, give us a call and we would be happy to help in any way that we can when it comes to your questions, concerns, or simply outright purchasing your coin collection!
Suppose you have a long way to take your coins. If you want to move your coins to Atlanta Gold & Coin Buyers from another state, that could mean 3 hours or more. Not to mention gas prices these days! That’s time out of your busy life or time away from your job and potentially missed income.
In some cases, we can eliminate that barrier and concern for you. If you believe you have a larger coin collection made up of precious metals such as gold, platinum, or silver coins, give us a call to discuss in further detail. We may be able to come to you, depending on our availability and the size of the collection.
What Kinds of Coin Collections Do We Transport?
While we rarely offer transportation services for coin collections, we want to help when we can and when it makes sense from a business perspective.
Just because a coin collection is made up of hundreds or thousands of coins and is heavy, does not mean it is a high value collection. We have had many “large” collections brought to us that resulted in a not so large payout due to most of the coins being face value. When we say face value, we mean worth what they were minted as and are denominated as.
For example, if you have a 1985 Washington Quarter in the collection, we are happy to pay you 25 cents for that copper-nickel quarter. If you have a 1964 or earlier Washington Quarter in the collection, we are happy to pay you a few dollars, depending on the price of silver at the time of your appointment.
Suppose a church or other nonprofit organization has acquired a large collection of coins. If you are out of state or simply don’t have the manpower available to move the coins, Atlanta Gold & Coin Buyers can step in and take on that task if it makes sense from a time, energy, and financial point of view.
Heavier collections present more of a physical challenge, so it’s logical that you would need extra help.
For example, large collections, such as when we purchase estate coin collections or a large number of coins you’ve gathered over a lifetime of collecting, are heavier and harder to move.
In addition, we can bring your coins in if they are collectible or numismatic, and may have significant value due to their rarity. Beyond lifting the weight of all that gold and silver for you, we can also ensure that they are safe during transportation. We deliver them securely to our local office in metro Atlanta.
When Is the Best Time to Ask for Help?
We will consider your request any time you need to transport your coins to us.
However, there are certain times that make more sense. Specifically, it is best to give us some time to attempt to fit the move into our schedule. If you can, we ask that you give us a few weeks’ notice before you need us to have the coins at our location.
This reduces the disruption of our business and makes it more likely that we will be able to approve your request. If you find yourself in a pinch, do not hesitate to give us a call and if we can assist. We will be more than happy to, but please understand we do work by appointment and many of those are scheduled days or weeks in advance.
Mailing Your Coins to Us
For those who have fewer coins for us to appraise and/or buy, we recommend mailing or bringing them to us. Mailing coins is easy, but you need to follow proper procedures. Here’s how we recommend you mail your coins to us.
- Call us at (404) 236-9744 before you mail your coins to us. We will let you know if we are interested in purchasing them. Also, we will give you a preliminary quote.
- Complete our form, watch for the emailed copy, and print it out.
- Send the form with your secured items. Put it in the smallest box possible, double-box it, and add packing materials to protect it and prevent it from shifting.
- Label the package exactly like the following:
Atlanta G & C
P.O. Box 4072
Suwanee, GA 30024
- Ship via USPS, choosing First Class Priority or Registered Mail. Because it will be delivered to a P.O. Box, you cannot mail it through UPS or FEDEX. Be sure you get insurance on the package, opt for signature confirmation, and keep your tracking number to protect yourself and to notify us.
- Send us an email with the tracking number and date mailed as soon as you send it.
Then, once we pick up your package from the Post Office, we will send you a binding offer based on that date’s precious metals prices. At that point, you get to decide whether you want to buy or sell, with no pressure from us.
The Local Option for Bringing in Coins & Coin Collections
Of course, if you live in or are visiting the Atlanta area, you can simply carry in your gold and silver or rare collectible coins. However, it’s important that you reach us through our contact form or call us at the number above before you come in. We are open to customers by appointment only.
Then, simply bring your coins to our location. Our primary office is located in Duluth, Georgia. You’ll find us in the northeast suburbs of Atlanta, just off Medlock Bridge Road and near McGinnis Ferry Road.
Our address is:
11555 Medlock Bridge Road
