The following
slideshow provides some interesting pictures regarding the production of gold and silver eagles. As you can see, it’s not as simple and straightforward of a process as you may have thought. While the production of these coins is extremely efficient, the U.S. Mint oftentimes has difficulty keeping up with demand. Additionally, gold and silver planchets, which are essentially blank gold and silver coins on which the coins are minted, can be in short supply, further delaying the mintage of new coins.
For those individuals that are interested in exploring further, you can visit the U.S. Mint’s website at www.usmint.gov, for additional information on the production of gold and silver eagles, as well as other coins produced by the U.S. Mint.
